Hunter’s Quarry is a blog about RPGs. About making them great. About analyzing the components of what makes them great and how we can influence those components in our favor.
For the most part, due to my enjoyment of D&D 4E, 5E, and Castles and Crusades and Dungeon World, combined with a general lack of opportunity to dig deep into other rulesets, those are the systems I’ll use as a baseline for my examples and insights. If you’re familiar with 4E, Dungeon World, and C&C, you’ll notice that those three rulesets represent drastically different depictions of FRPGs. In a nutshell, that’s who I am. I come from the old school mindset that things should be simple (C&C) and the story should trump everything (Dungeon World), but at the same time, I really enjoy the tactical design cues of more modern games like 4E. I’m generally agnostic when it comes to edition wars and try not to get involved in all the “my game rules and your game sucks” conversations. So even if you don’t play 4E/5E, Dungeon World, or C&C, this should be a safe place for you to visit from time to time. Whether you play OD&D, AD&D, Pathfinder, 4E, C&C, OSRIC, Basic Fantasy RPG, or Swords and Wizardry, doesn’t matter to me. What matters is if you’re having fun and your experiences are worth sharing. Interesting topics that relate to other RPGs will get some attention as well (including PC, Console and Board games).
Generally, I intend to use this blog as a repository for my thoughts about the game, ideas about making it even better, adventure hooks I think people might find interesting or useful, and responses to what’s happening in the RPG blogosphere as it relates to my interests. If someone says something noteworthy on a blog I have visited, has a great idea, or asks a question I want to address, I’ll likely link to it here and comment on it.
My hope is to begin by accumulating my ideas and inspirations while ultimately initiating a dialog, either through comments on this site, or through responses on other sites across the web. Hopefully, something useful will be the end result. So, that’s it, I’m on the hunt for a great game of D&D. It is my quarry. That’s why the site is named what it is. Also….because Rangers are awesome.
